Fellow parishioners watched in horror as Aldo Bianchini, 46, used his bare hands to pull out both eyeballs. Bianchini later told surgeons, who were unable to save his vision, he heard voices that told him to do it.
"He was in a great deal of agony and he was covered in blood," Dr. Gino Barbacci told the Daily Mail. "He said that he had used his bare hands to gouge out his eye balls after hearing voices telling him to do so - to do something like that requires super human strength."

I'm reminded of mothers across the world admonishing their kids with, "...and I suppose you'd put your hand in a fire if somebody told you to?!" :)
What a thing to do! Surely the pain from the first eye would have snapped him back to reality? To start going for the second is amazing.
From elsewhere: 'It is thought Bianchini suffered from psychological problems in the past.' I hope so. An outcome of possible schizophrenia is easier to approach than the notion that we could do such a thing to ourselves one day without precursor or warning. 'It is thought' doesn't mean a whole lot though...
